Kings win season finale

DRESDEN – Dresden Kings goalie Brett Brochu made 23 saves in a 4-1 win over the Wheatley Omstead Sharks on Tuesday in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division.

Eric Carter and Nolan VandenBoorn each had a goal and an assist before a crowd of 147 at the Ken Houston Memorial Agricultural Centre.

Darien Davis and Kenny Chisholm of the Kings scored in the second period for a 2-1 lead. Carter and VandenBoorn tallied in the third.

The Kings (29-9-0-2) moved back into second place with the season-finale win. They can finish no lower than third.

Alixe Saliba scored and Catalin Morin made 30 saves for the seventh-place Sharks (15-22-0-2).

The Sharks will host the Blenheim Blades in the season finale for both teams at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wheatley Area Arena.

First-place 73’s top Blades

ESSEX – Bailey Smith scored for the Blenheim Blades in a 4-1 loss to the Essex 73’s on Tuesday in the PJHL Stobbs Division.

73’s goalie Jax D’Hondt made 27 saves as Essex (29-6-1-4) clinched sole possession of first place. Smith spoiled his shutout bid with 1:05 left in the third period.

Chris Dewulf made 31 saves for the sixth-place Blades (17-19-2-1).

Josh Pope-Ferguson scored two for the 73’s. Owen Meyerink and Luke Gecse added singles.

Carleton fourth all-time

AMES, Iowa – Bridget Carleton of Chatham scored a game-high 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting in the No. 23 Iowa State Cyclones’ 105-66 win over the Texas Tech Lady Raiders on Tuesday.

Carleton hauled down a team-high seven rebounds. She had three assists and was 4-of-7 on three-pointers.

The senior guard moved into fourth place on the Cyclones’ all-time scoring list with 1,814 points. She needs 53 points for sole possession of third place.

Iowa State (16-5, 6-3 Big 12) will visit Kansas State on Saturday.

Hawks to host tournament

The Chatham Sports Hall of Fame Invitational senior girls’ volleyball tournament will be played Saturday at Chatham-Kent Secondary School.

The host CKSS Golden Hawks are joined by Ursuline and McGregor at the 15-team tournament.

The Chatham Sports Hall of Fame is a new sponsor this year.

Round-robin play begins at 9 a.m. The final is scheduled for 7:40 p.m.

The pools are: Windsor Massey, Waterloo and London Saunders (A); McGregor, London Lucas and Windsor Holy Names (B); Lambton Central, Ursuline and LaSalle Villanova (C); CKSS, LaSalle Sandwich and Stratford St. Michael (D); and Walkerton, Georgetown Christ the King and Amherstburg General Amherst (E).

Curling league postponed

All games were postponed Tuesday in the Chatham-Kent Major Curling League.

The regular season will now wrap up Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Chatham Granite Club at 6:45 p.m.

The matchups are: Dale Kelly (7-2) vs. Alex Jeromel (1-8), Bob Ingram (4-5) vs. Phil Daniel (6-3), Matt Mapletoft (7-2) vs. Graeme Robson (2-7), Jim Brackett (6-3) vs. Brian Glover (4-5), and Bob Quick (3-6) vs. John Young Jr. (5-4).
