The primary job of central midfielders is the responsibility given to them, either to create, control or break up play. However, with the recent developments in the game, many midfielders have adopted goalscoring duties as well, in an attempt to help the teams break the potential deadlock their attackers might not have been able to break.
Some have even taken it as their primary responsibility to ghost from midfield into the penalty box to score goals consistently, a trend that Frank Lampard pioneered and players like Aaron Ramsey and Paul Pogba have displayed in recent seasons.
Here’s a look at the five highest scoring midfielders in the 2018/19 season:
5. Paul Pogba
Manchester United’s star midfielder had a tough season, being called out by several pundits and fans of the club for his apparently lacklustre performances.
However, Paul Pogba did what he good at, urging the team forward at every given opportunity and scoring important goals for the club. This was his best season in terms of goals, as he scored 13 times in the league, apart from assisting nine times, out of a total of 16 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.
He has been linked with Real Madrid and a return to Juventus due to the Red Devils failure to qualify for the Champions League.
4. Pablo Sarabia
Sevilla’s highest scorer this past season was not their highly-rated striker Wissam Ben Yedder, but midfielder Pablo Sarabia, who did wonders in Spain this season, thus ensuring his stock rises tremendously.
The versatile midfielder scored 13 goals and assisted 13 times in the league in the 2018/19 season for Los Nervionenses and almost singlehandedly helped them qualify for the Europa League in what was a season marred by inconsistency.
Sarabia has been linked with Real Madrid but it remains to be seen if he does make a move this summer.
3. Kai Havertz
The German attacking midfielder played as a second striker for some part of the season, and used that opportunity to showcase his ability to chip in with goals. Thanks to that, he achieved a first-team place for Die Mannschaft, based entirely on his performances in the Bundesliga.
Having scored 17 goals for Bayer Leverkusen this season, Kai Havertz became the club’s most important player, at just 19 years of age. He also achieved the record for being the only teenager to score more than 15 goals for a German club.
2. Marco Reus
Having played on the left wing throughout his career, the Borussia Dortmund captain was played as an attacking midfielder for most parts of the 2018/19 season, and on the rare occasion, as a false nine.
Marco Reus scored 17 goals and 11 assists in another season riddled with injuries and suspensions. Despite his great form, he saw his season marred by injuries as he could have ended up with many more goals.
The former Borussia Monchengladbach winger led the team to a brilliant title challenge against perennial title winners Bayern Munich and helped guide younger forwards like Jadon Sancho and Bruun Larsen in their development.
1. Bruno Fernandes
While always rated as a tremendous prospect in Portugal, Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes was in magnificent goal scoring form this season, leading to comparisons with Chelsea great Frank Lampard.
He scored an incredible 20 goals in 33 games this season, while showing a creative edge as well as he assisted 13 times for the Lisbon club, in what was an outstanding league season.
Justifiably, he has been linked with top English teams like Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, and looks all set to make a move to a bigger surrounding.
