MARYVILLE — The ninth annual Kayaking for a Day on Drost Lake is set for July 6 with the help of Craig Heaton.
Heaton is a kayaking enthusiast from Collinsville who is a part of clubs and is an avid adventurer.
“Nine years ago he came to a committee meeting and pitched the idea of this day at Drost Lake. He said that it is big enough to hold many people at one time, it is a nice spot to learn how to kayak or just for leisure and is small enough to keep everyone safe. We figured this would be a wonderful option for the community and gave the go-ahead,” Maryville Parks and Recreation committee member Sharon Petty said.
Participants will get an hour of boating on the lake, the event will have five different sessions starting at noon, 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. The event uses kayaks donated by willing volunteers.
“This event is great for a number of reasons. If you are looking for something for the whole family, learning how to kayak, wanting to learn about what to look for when buying a kayak or just enjoying the outdoors,” Petty said.
There are three different styles of kayaks that will be available for use. Heaton and other enthusiasts will be around to answer any questions about what kayak may be best for their needs, price range and style.
This event was originally designed to get the community together and help beginners and advanced enthusiasts come together and learn from one another, Petty added.
“It started from a nice idea to something big. Last year we had about 230 people come out from all over the Maryville area, as well as the St. Louis area. This has been getting better every year and is a real success for Parks and Rec. here in Maryville. We look forward to this year’s event and many more through the years,” Petty said.
The committee asks for registration ahead of time, walk-ins are welcome but only will boat if kayaks are available. To register call 618-772-8555 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to reserve your spot.
The committee asks for kayak owners interested in donating equipment for the day to show up before the event starts. Donators are welcome to stay during the event or come back at the end to pick their kayak up.
In case of bad weather, the event at large may be rescheduled or individual sessions may be, as well. However, a date is yet to be scheduled. All pre-registered boaters will be called and informed in case of rescheduling.
