A few weeks of NBA free agency created a flurry of action. Several big stars and key players were on the move, and the league has a drastically different look heading into the 2019-20 season. The betting market and futures odds have adjusted accordingly and also have another new favorite – the Los Angeles Clippers.
Following the Raptors victory parade as NBA champions after they defeated the Warriors as underdog in the NBA finals, the 2020 futures odds were changing as NBA free agency was set to start June 30. Just 27 hours into free agency, nearly 60 new player deals were signed adding up to $3,400,000,000.
That was just the start. Following the Nets signing three stars in Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan, the LA Clippers landed Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, creating another adjustment in the futures market with the Clippers now the 4-1 favorite followed by the Lakers and Bucks.
It’s been more than a decade since you could make the case for up to eight NBA teams to win the title. But the flurry of free agency and players on the move has created a wide open field heading into the 2019-20 season.
The top tier of teams favored to win the 2020 NBA Championship in mid-June looked like this as news broke of several free agents and where they were headed including the trade of Anthony Davis from New Orleans to the LA Lakers:
Odds: Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas
Lakers (3-1), Bucks (6-1), Clippers (7-1), Raptors (8-1), (8-1), Rockets (8-1), Warriors (12-1), 76ers (12-1), Nuggets (16-1), Jazz (20-1), Thunder (20-1), Nets (20-1).
The Lakers odds were 20-1 in May as the playoffs were ongoing, and then started to take money as the rumblings of an Anthony Davis trade made media news. The SuperBook took a $10,000 bet on the Lakers to win the 2020 Championship just minutes before the team announced the trade. Los Angeles took even more money and the SuperBook took another $10,000 bet on the Lakers at odds below 2-1, which was borderline ridiculous (as was the bet, although noting that the Lakers would have moved to near -150 odds had they landed yet-to-be signed Kawhi Leonard).
Nick Bogdanovich, Director of Trading for William Hill sportsbook, the largest bookmaker in Nevada, notes that the Lakers are the biggest liability (six figures) on the futures market with the Warriors and Nets also taking more money to win the 2020 Championship. William Hill now runs bookmaking operations and sportsbooks in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Mississippi and West Virginia as legal sports betting spreads across the country.
The situation surrounding free agency is also a bit bungled. NBA commissioner Adam Silver has acknowledged that the league has “work to do” in order to enforce the rules on draft trades and free agency, and said “trade demands are disheartening” and is something that “needs to be addressed.”
Now another update of the 2020 Championship odds and futures market as the major moves, transactions and trades are finalized. Top players join new teams, including Chris Paul to Oklahoma City and Russell Westbrook to Houston. The swap creates another adjustment in the odds. The Thunder also receive multiple first round draft picks as they rebuild and drop to the bottom of the futures odds board at 1,000-1 along with the NY Knicks, Hornets, Wizards and Cavaliers.
