State of golf: Is there another freshman who will qualify individually for the state tournament? Carlsbad’s Meghan Royal became the third section ninth-grader in three years to do so last fall. Preceding her were Scripps Ranch’s Napua Glossner (2016) and Rancho Bernardo’s Vanessa Ho (2017) prior to her transfer from Torrey Pines. Royal tied for 17th place last fall. The tournament returns to Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach on Nov. 19 as part of a two-year alternating cycle.

Bold Broncos: While Rancho Bernardo’s two-year section title reign ended last fall, the Broncos still have a string of nine consecutive appearances in the SoCal Regional tourney. Also, RB entered the season with 110 straight match victories, dating to 2014. Ho should pace the Broncos this season along with classmate Serena Chi. Rancho Bernardo placed second in the section last fall.

Birds of a feather: Watch out for Scripps Ranch. The Falcons tied for third overall in the section tourney, one spot away from a regional team berth and up one place from the previous year. Glossner heads a solid senior core that also includes Kathleen Keomahavong and Zoe Lynch. Also known as the Falcons, Torrey Pines tied for third as well. These Falcons look to contend behind junior Libby Fleming and senior Summer Yang.

Pointing right way: Between the two section titles in three years by former Mater Dei Catholic golfer Brianna Navarrosa, Point Loma’s Lauren Gomez owns the other crown that she won as a freshman two years ago. Gomez tied for fifth place last season, followed by Pointers classmate Mary Damian, each advancing to the regionals. Also showing promise for Point Loma is Taylor Riley, the only freshman to earn All-Western League honors last season.

Championship play: Of the section’s 12 individual qualifiers for last year’s SoCal Regional championships, nine are due back this season. While Gomez and Ho bid for their third such appearance, seeking repeats are Royal, El Camino sophomore Jasmine Leovao, Coronado senior Crista Izuzquiza, University city sophomore Lynn Pham, Mater Dei Catholic junior Melanie Reyes and Canyon Crest junior Michelle Yi. The regionals are again set at the Brookside Golf Club adjacent to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Nov. 14.
