Chesterton, Ind. – Paced by its newcomers in the first rounds of the 2019-20 season-opening event, the Western Carolina men’s golf team sits in 12th-place overall with a two-round score of 613 at the Crusader Collegiate being contested at the par-72, 6,997-yard Sand Creek Country Club.

Catamount freshman Pierre Viallaneix posted rounds of 1-over 73 and 4-over 76 for a two-round score of 5-over par 149 in his collegiate debut. Opening his two rounds on the par-3 11th on the back nine, the Apopka, Fla., product carded six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 No. 1 on Monday. Viallaneix enters the final round tied with six other golfers, just six strokes outside the top 10.

Redshirt freshman transfer Tyler Bussert sits in a tie for 44th overall, trimming three strokes off his opening-round 77 to shot 2-over par 74 in the second round for a total of 151. The Iowa-transfer carded five birdies on Monday. Freshman Quinton Metz is in the clubhouse in 64th after firing consecutive rounds of 78 for a total of 156 in his collegiate debut. Metz had four birdies, three coming in the first round.

Rounding out WCU’s scoring five are freshman Magnus Pedersen and sophomore Tumi Kúld, both tied for 65th with matching 36 hole scores of 157. They both carded 79 in the first round before dropping a stroke in the second to 6-over par, 78. Kúld, who charted five birdies, did rank among the tournament leaders in par-3 scoring at 2.75, 1-under par.

Playing unattached as an individual, junior Zach Caudill sits tied with teammates Kúld and Pedersen in 65th overall at 157.

With five individual golfers inside the top 15 collectively including the overall individual leader, Wright State (567) carries a six-stroke lead over tourney-host, Valparaiso (573) into Tuesday’s final round. Loyola-Chicago sits in third overall, 12 total strokes off the pace at 579 collectively with Purdue Fort Wayne and North Dakota State tied for fourth at 8-over par, 584.

Wright State’s Mikkel Mathieson (136) posted a pair of rounds in the 60s including a 3-under par 69 and a 5-under par round of 67 to carry a four-stroke lead over Valpo’s Charlie Toman (140) into Tuesday.
