While most people are understanding and tolerant of cyclists, there are a few dangerous exceptions.

Over the past year, a number of cyclists have fallen victim to cruel and unprovoked attacks from drivers, gangs and pedestrians.

Whether a hit and run or a stabbing, there are countless examples of cyclists being violently assaulted.

Below are a few examples of the times cyclists were targeted and attacked in Cambridgeshire this year. 

Grandad on bike ‘could have died’

John Freeburn was left with a gash to his face after he was pushed off his bike


A Cambridgeshire grandad was left with a gash to his face and internal bruising after he was ‘pushed off his bike’ in an unprovoked attack, he claimed in November.

72-year-old John Freeburn says he was on a cycle ride when a pick-up truck slowed down beside him. The passenger then leaned out of the window and pushed him off the road, according to John.

John, from Gorefield near Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, said the attack happened at around 3.30pm on Saturday 9 November.

Motorist drives ‘directly at’ cyclist


A cyclist claimed she was almost run down after a motorist drove straight at her – before turning round and coming back.

Roxanne DeBeaux, the executive director of Camcycle, claims that a male driver intentionally drove directly at her while she was cycling down Devonshire Road on 24 September.

In a series of Tweets documenting the event, she said: “Missed me by millimetres because I was cycling in primary and able to take evasive action. 

“If that wasn’t scary enough. He came back.”
 

Female cyclist pushed off saddle by man on motorbike

A woman was pushed from the saddle by a passing motorcyclist on St Ives Road


A woman was pushed from her bike by a passing motorcycle driver in March this year, police said.

The rider was cycling along St Ives Road, near Somersham on the morning of March 24 when she was shoved from the saddle.

It is believed the road was clear from other traffic at the time.

Serious sexual assault on female cyclist

Park Road, Peterborough


A female cyclist suffered a ‘serious sexual assault’ in the early hours of 14 April this year.

The victim, who is in her 20s, was cycling along Park Road near Elizabeth Court at about 3am when she was attacked.

Cyclist stabbed in ‘nasty’ attack by armed gang

A cyclist was seriously injured after being stabbed during a ‘nasty’ attack by an armed gang of men in broad daylight in April.

The victim who was cycling when he was approached by a group of men.

The gang, armed with weapons, then attacked the man in Kirkmeadow, Bretton in Peterborough.

He was taken to Peterborough City Hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Gang’s cold-blooded attack on cyclist in Cambridgeshire park

A cyclist was ambushed by a gang of men in a random attack in a Cambridgeshire park on 12 May.

The cold-blooded attack happened while the victim was riding his bike in Huntingdon.

A gang of young men targeted the victim who is in his 40s and was cycling near to Coneygear Park.
